The University of London are offering two free webinars for frontline staff working in student facing roles: with a particular emphasis on those working in student accommodation. The topics covered will be mental health awareness and helping Chinese students adjust to life in the UK.
The webinars are designed to be interactive ( polls, question and answers etc) and so places will be limited to 60 for each event. They will, however, be recorded and available for a week afterwards.
We are carrying out the webinars to test whether there is an appetite for a distance learning course, focussing on student welfare.
We would, therefore, appreciate feedback on what you thought of the webinars once they've taken place.
If you have any questions about this initiative, please email email@example.com
Mental Health Awareness- Helen Weighell and Emma Nabavian
An introduction to mental health awareness for frontline staff working in student accommodation.
With student mental health issues on the rise, this webinar aims to raise awareness of commonly experienced issues. We will consider the question what is ‘mental health’, look at the particular needs and challenges of this life stage, and help equip staff to respond appropriately to students in psychological need.
Emma Nabavian: Emma Nabavian has worked in student welfare for a number of years. She is trained as a counsellor and psychotherapist and manages the Student Advice & Counselling Service at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. A particular area of interest for Emma is the crossover between counselling and other pastoral roles within a Higher Education setting. In her spare time she (often) plays the violin in amateur orchestras, and is also an avid knitter.

Supporting Chinese students with the cultural transition to UKHE - Jo Bloxham from Thinking People
The aim of this session is to help accommodation staff understand some of the challenges that are presented for Chinese students coming to live and study in the UK. The session will give participants the opportunity to hear about these experiences from Chinese students themselves, to see some university campuses and student dormitories in China and to reflect on the ways we can help support these students
